Single-Acting Cylinders
In single-acting hydraulic cylinders, pressurised oil is applied to only one surface of the piston. Forward movement is achieved by hydraulic force, while return movement is provided by spring force or the weight of the load. Their simple construction makes them low-cost and easy to maintain.
Feed units of hydraulic presses, lifting arms of agricultural machinery, and simple lifting systems are common application areas for single-acting cylinders.
Double-Acting Cylinders
In double-acting cylinders, pressure can be applied independently to both sides of the piston. This allows both forward and return movement to be controlled hydraulically. They offer more precise positioning and higher control capacity.
Double-acting cylinders are preferred in excavator booms, forklift lifting systems, and CNC presses. They are the ideal solution for all applications requiring two-directional force control.
Selection Criteria
If your application requires control of return movement, a double-acting cylinder is appropriate; if single-directional force is sufficient, a single-acting cylinder will be an economical choice. Working pressure, stroke speed, and mounting space should also be considered in selection.
