Selecting Hydraulic Cylinder Sealing Elements

Correct selection of O-rings, wipers, and gaskets; differences between NBR, Viton, and PTFE.

Why Is Sealing Critical?

Sealing elements in hydraulic cylinders are the most sensitive components that prevent oil leakage under high pressure and block contaminants from entering from the external environment. Incorrect material selection quickly leads to gasket damage and system failure.

For each application, the correct sealing element must be determined by considering operating temperature, pressure value, environmental conditions, and the type of hydraulic oil used.

Material Types

NBR (Nitrile Rubber): The most widely used material in standard hydraulic applications. It provides reliable performance at temperatures between -30°C and +100°C.

Viton (FKM): Resistant to high temperature and aggressive chemicals. Preferred at operating temperatures up to 200°C. PTFE-based gaskets are used in applications requiring low friction and broad chemical resistance.

Tips for Correct Selection

Gasket dimensions must comply with ISO standards, and crushing or twisting must not occur during assembly. The piston rod surface must be smooth and scratch-free; otherwise, wiper life is shortened.
