Types of Damage
The piston rod is the most exposed and most damaged part of the cylinder. Scratches damage the wiper system and cause leakage. Corrosion occurs in humid environments or through contact with aggressive chemicals.
Bending occurs as a result of excessive load or impact and prevents the cylinder from operating properly. Micro-cracks can grow over time due to fatigue and develop into serious failures.
Prevention Methods
The piston rod should be cleaned daily and accumulation of dust and sand prevented. The wiper system must be kept intact and oil leakage remedied immediately.
Excessive load should not be applied and cylinder stroke limits must be respected. Protective covers protect the rod from external factors during extended downtime.
Repair and Renewal
Light scratches can be removed by honing and re-chrome plating. In cases of deep damage or bending, new piston rod manufacturing is required.
